Protect Your Custom Wig This Winter with These 4 Tips

With winter looming, keeping your custom wig protected from the harsh weather conditions becomes important, particularly if you want to continue looking and feeling great even when temperatures plummet.

Wind, cold temperatures, and low humidity can be damaging to wigs, and if you’ve invested in a high-quality human hair wig, you’ll want to do everything you can to keep it in top condition and ready to wear whenever you need it. And although conditions for wigs in Miami, Florida, might be a little more favourable, if you plan to travel anywhere that experiences frost and snow, you’ll want to follow these 4 tips to protect your wig from weather damage:

1. Apply a suitable hair oil and wash with a moisturizing shampoo.

Dry weather can strip your wig of moisture, leaving it looking and feeling brittle and frizzy. To keep your wig moisturized when humidity levels drop, you can apply a small amount of hair oil suitable for human hair wigs, concentrating on the ends and avoiding the cap and knots. Wash your wig with a moisturizing shampoo before applying a conditioner. Leave it to sit for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

For additional moisture, you can occasionally apply a deep conditioner, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Once the treatment is complete, gently detangle the hair with a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends.

2. Dry your wig gently.

Cold, dry winter air can already leave wigs feeling brittle, so it’s best not to add to that damage by exposing them to excessive heat. Heat exposure should be minimized during the winter months, so even after washing your wig, try to restrict the use of a blow dryer and any heated styling tools. Allowing your wig to dry naturally can help reduce heat-related damage, although a blow dryer on a suitable low setting with heat protection can also be used when needed.

3. Protect your wig from rain and snow.

Despite humidity levels being lower in winter, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t limit your wig’s exposure to environmental moisture like rain and snow.

Keep your wig protected in the rain or snow by covering your head with a suitable hat or hood, or using an umbrella. If getting your wig wet is unavoidable, gently blot away excess moisture and allow it to dry thoroughly, or use a suitable low-heat setting, to help prevent unnecessary damage to the hair and cap.

4. Keep your wig tangle-free.

Strong winds are a common occurrence during the winter months, and these can easily cause the hairs of your wig to become tangled. Although one tangle may seem innocuous enough, that one tangle can quickly become a knot, and before you know it, you’ve got a section of hair that can’t easily be untangled without causing damage. In a worst-case scenario, untangling the knot may result in a loss of hair, which can’t easily be replaced. Without the natural oils supplied by the scalp, custom wigs in Miami can be more prone to dryness and tangling, making regular care especially important.

Winter can be a wonderful time of year, and you have every right to enjoy it while wearing a stunning, natural-looking wig. But looking and feeling great when temperatures plummet does mean taking a few extra steps to protect your wig from the elements.
